So Much Pretty

Hi Loves! My baby cousin, Leslie Carrasco, is running the San Diego Rock N’ Roll Marathon this coming June. While my cousin is a delightful badass and runs just for the fun of it (gross), she’s also committed to raising $2,500, in order to raise money to find a cure for Leukemia.

For those of you who don’t know (and those of you who do), in December ’96 I went to the doctor for a routine physical. A few days after my appointment, I was called in to re-take some blood tests as my results were “atypical.” After many subsequent blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy, I was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL). APL is rare form of leukemia: I had no symptoms. I was 11 years old, in the 7th grade, and my favorite band was Bush because Gavin Rossdale was just like, so hot. I spent the better part of year undergoing 2 different kinds of chemotherapy. My hair fell out. My fingernails turned black. My joints stiffened up so badly I was relegated to a wheelchair for a month. I spent both Christmas and my 12th birthday in the hospital. And in July 1997, I went into remission, where I stayed for exactly 12 years.

Last summer, I suffered a minor relapse, and went back on “maintenance” therapy, which is a nice term for low-dose chemotherapy. My hair didn’t fall out this time, but damned if I couldn’t get out of bed, my fingernails turned brittle, and my nausea wouldn’t subside. Of course, some of you know this because I took a break from blogging and such to concentrate on my health. And of course, I’m happy to report that I am 100 % Cancer-Free again! Yay!

That being said, Leukemia is obviously a very important cause to my family and I, and my cousin running the race is totally touching and annoying (because she’s making me look bad here, omg!) and awesome, and it would be great if you guys could donate whatever you can! Even $10 makes a difference, because the more money we raise, the more we can pay scientists to research for a cure.
